Cairns locals encouraged to jump aboard the iconic KSR this Australia Day

23/01/2020

Queensland Rail is giving Far North Queenslanders the chance to celebrate Australia Day in style with half price tickets on the Kuranda Scenic Railway (KSR) on Sunday 26 January.

Queensland Rail Executive General Manager Travel and Tourism Martin Ryan said the special offer was an excellent opportunity for locals to make the most of the public holiday and experience all that Far North Queensland's most iconic rail journey had to offer.

"On Australia Day, we are giving customers living in Cairns and surrounding areas the chance to be a tourist for a day in their own backyard," Mr Ryan said.

"Every year, an average of more than 400,000 tourists travel from across the world to experience the KSR, and for one day only, Far North Queenslanders can experience it for half the normal price."

Mr Ryan said the half price Australia Day tickets were a great opportunity for friends and families to catch-up, sit back, relax, and enjoy the award-winning journey up the Kuranda Range from the comfort of the heritage carriages.

"This is the fifth consecutive year we have offered half price tickets as part of Australia Day celebrations," he said.

"Whether it's your first time travelling on the KSR or your 20th, it's always an adventure stepping back in time on the 128-year-old rail line as it winds its way through World Heritage listed tropical rainforest.

"We've also organised for an Aussie Bush Band and classic Aussie barbecue to entertain customers at Freshwater Station in the morning.

"A one-way ticket from Cairns to Kuranda will cost $25 per adult and $12.50 per child, providing an affordable, family-friendly way to explore and celebrate the beautiful Cairns region on Australia Day," Mr Ryan said.

To be eligible for the half price tickets, residents (Port Douglas to Cardwell including the Atherton Tablelands) require identification with their local address at the time of ticketing.
